#LifeLessons: Carpe Diem!

When you hear the quote ‘seize the day’ what do you think of? Do you think of epic adventures, taking once in a lifetime trips across the world or doing scary risk taking tasks even Steve Irwin would even be frightened of. It can be so easy to slip into the day to day humdrum of life that we forget that life is truly a blessing and we should live everyday like our last; not in a irresponsible, quit my job and move half way across the world kind of way, but in a, sadness and sweating the small stuff really is not worth it kind of way. We don’t have to be 100% the adventurous, crazy person everyday, living in the moment and embracing everyday like its’ your last can sometimes mean loving and forgiving and saying yes to risky opportunities when you would usually say no, looking upwards and being present.

Be Present.

If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you will know how I promote mindfulness as something that everyone should practice at every opportunity. No matter the season of your life, no matter what you are currently facing, looking outside your own little bubble and seeing what you have to be grateful for, always seeing the cup as being half full rather than empty and embracing the current moment.

In the hard times, it’s within our instinct to want to rush through the struggle. Instead we can choose see it as a lesson, something to build you into the stronger person you are supposed to be. Look at every challenging space that you are in as a time to learn and in fact, something that you should be thankful for because one day, you will look back and be happy that you learnt it sooner rather than later. No matter what the season, it’s important to see it as part of the bigger plan of your life, not something that should be rushed through to get to the ‘good’ part.

Treat Yo Self.

Everyone knows that self discipline is absolutely key in life not to lash out at someone who has bumped into you on a busy highstreet or to reach where you want to be in terms of your career but when was the last time you gave yourself an allowance. Don’t be so hard on yourself that you forget the joy in the everyday small moments. Don’t be so in a rush to hit goals and jump ahead that you forget to pause, smile and treat yourself for the accomplishments and self discipline needed to reach those goals. Pat yourself on the back and celebrate your successes!

LISTEN & Celebrate Others.

It is one of the easiest things in the world to passively put your tunnel vision sunglasses on and block out others wants and needs if they’re not in your immediate circle of family and friends. The people around you can be going through unimaginable things and sometimes all they need is a listening ear so that they can talk it all out, without fear of judgement, opinion or blame. Part of living everyday to its fullest is appreciating and valuing all those around you enough to show how much you care about them, just to be there for them when they need you.

This can also mean that you should be lifting up others, empowering them to become their best selves. At the end of it, life is all about relationships; we are not lone islands, solely self sufficient on our own strength. Put out what you want in the world; give out love, positivity and encouragement when you see someone needs it; don’t withhold compliments or affirmations when someone is doing something you like or respect. You never know how much your words can impact people for the better and how much it can be exactly what they need to make the next step and nothing is more powerful than being that voice for someone.

Say Yes.

Last but not least, laugh in the face of fear today. If today was your last day on earth have you taken every opportunity that has come your way? Every day that goes past are days you’ll never get back so seize it! You can only regret the things you do not do, any other ‘mistakes’ are simply lessons learned. No one walks into life knowing exactly what they are doing so don’t be afraid to make mistakes, take risks or stand up for what you believe in. Life is way too short for you to be living a shadow of your potential.

There you go guys, I hope that you taken a whole new practical meaning to the words carpe diem and I hope you implement these tips into your day to day life!

  1. Great tips, you are absolutely right. In each day I try to include some little thing which makes me (or those who matter to me the most) happy. It can be some really tiny thing – like a hug, or a joke, but it’s enough to make a day more special and sometimes even magical! 🙂
