Hey, guys! My name is Calvin and I’m the creator of Jimvin’s Gains. I’m currently going through a Personal Training (PT) course. I’m doing this with a genuine view to help everybody achieve their fitness goals. Even, if they are not a paying customer.
I’m here today to discuss a few of the problems with the fitness industry. We all have a good idea that we are constantly being targeted by marketers, but since becoming a marketer myself, I have started to realise just how much we actually get targeted.
Don’t worry, I’m not going to start talking about marketing and be all boring. But, it is important to understand that marketing is the key culprit of all the misleading information out there. One of the key stages of marketing is to ‘educate’, and this is the reason why there is so much information out there! But anyway, let’s get a little more specific.
Now this is an absolute kicker for me because I have gone through the struggles of weight loss and even weight gain in my earlier years. If you have ever tried dieting before you’ll understand what I mean when I say you can read so many different articles explaining why the 5:2 diet, weight watchers or the carb free diet is the best diet ever. But, which one is the best? Well, the fact is, they’re all good because they are all restrictive diets and if you do as you’re told you will lose weight.
However, we’re all adults here – why should we be told what to do? Why can’t we get useful information which will empower us to make the right decisions? That way, when we get lunch we can choose between a burger or a salad.
Now, that all very good saying that if you want real information you shouldn’t read the first article you see in a magazine or on the web. But, when PT’s are also ranting and raving about these diets when they haven’t even got any qualifications in nutrition – who can you trust, right? I’ll come back to that one later.
Similar to before, there are an awful lot of exercise routines out there. Too many to count in fact, but if you have a particular goal, you have to think long and hard about which exercise routine will be the best for you. But, first, you need to filter out all the marketing spool and get to the hard facts. That’s a pretty daunting task in itself and it can take hours of research.
So, saying this, can you just go to a PT and get all the information you need from them? Well, in the ideal world; yes. Unfortunately, we do not live in an ideal world and it just isn’t that simple. Unfortunately, you have to research your PT’s too. Don’t get me wrong, they know an awful lot more than the typical Joe Blogs, but again, some of them just don’t have a clue about what is best for their client.
Honestly, the best advice I can give you here is to do anything! Go for a walk in the park with your dog more often. Go to the gym and take part in a spin class. Whatever you want to do, just go and do it. At least that way, you are heading in the right direction.
Changes are coming
Fortunately, there are a lot of people, that want to get rid of this sort of behaviour in the industry. However, these people still need to make a living and let’s face it, people don’t want to see the truth, they want to see something exciting!
Or do they?
People are getting wise now. People are beginning to understand how marketing affects their education. Unfortunately, this doesn’t stop these companies from trying, which leaves us with far too much information to make sense of.
Who can you trust?
So earlier on, I asked you who could you trust. Well, the answer is fairly straightforward and the same rule should be applied to all aspects of life. The person you can trust is the person who upholds their integrity and proves their worth with their own body. Not necessarily in their own physique, but, the people that treat their body like a temple and show the required disciplines. The ones that are 110% confident that everything they say is correct can still take part in a debate and actually listen.
Alas, it just isn’t that simple. The ‘good’ people in the industry don’t often market themselves because it is an extremely competitive market and often get fed up with not seeing the return because their methods aren’t exciting enough! Heck, I’ve been there myself. There have been times where I try and mix it up a little to try and get some more views but those efforts go unnoticed. Besides, it’s expensive enough to get the qualification to become a personal trainer, why would anybody want to go and spend more money when they could just go and work for some chain gym and make money the ‘easy’ way, right?
Help us out!
That’s where we come in. I may not be a qualified personal trainer yet, but I’m on my way and I intend to make waves. I’m not alone, others are trying too. Given time, there will be enough of us out there to outnumber the ‘money-grabbers’ and we will have enough material to outrank them too. But we need your support. So please, if you find somebody that knows what they are talking about and isn’t just throwing products at you. Please, give their material a like and a comment to give us that extra push to continue.
